Post Brown gasket
So yesterday after i was done with my conversion my friend told me why is you gasket like that. I told him wich one its the one that goes from the manifold to turbo. So we took it apart there was this weird ring inside the mani and turbo. I remembered I bought the gasket silver now its all brown. Is this normal or am I running rich lean or something. Can this be because I have a crack in the manifold.

Oh cool thanks. Well I can hear gas escaping right around the downpipe. There is a crack on the manifold but its small right now you cant hear anything comming out from there. I looked at it really closely and you can see the gasket is turning a really shiny blue like the tip of a stainless steel exahust or like you put a torch to it its really blue brown then gold at the tips. Its hard to explain it. I think I might have a bad head. The gasket is 3 diff colors. 1/3 is blue another third is gold then the outer is brown.

Come one no body can help me out. Oh yeah today at autoshop I finally put the car in the garage and did a vacuum test it was at 14 vacuum and the needle would vibrate. Also I used the stethoscope and there is no rod knock like I was told the bottom of the block is silent. However I do have a bad lifter. The noise got so loud at intake lifter cylinder number 4.

That gasket is in a very hot area and it will change color. If it has carbon on it then you have an exhaust leak, if it is just discolored from heat that is fine.

The best thing for lifters is to get new ones. You don't necessarily need a whole set of them, you can just change the ones that went bad.

By the way, where is my tension tool?

I would just go ahead and change all the lifters since your at it, it's going to be hard trying to pin point which one(s) are bad.

To change out the lifters should I do what some guy at team-2g.com did and convert to solid lifters or something like that or is it not worth it. How much am I looking at for changing and adjusting the lifters if they need to be adjusted.

A full set of lifters should cost around $110 and it is a job that can be done yourself. You pretty much need to set the timing to number 1 TDC and then zip tie the timing belt to the cam gears very well so it can't move and then remove the cams and replace the lifters.

Check the timing once it is put back together to make sure the marks line up but if all goes well they should line up and you won't have to re-set the timing.

or you can say f-the timing crap and use a pry-bar to remove the lifter. just place in under the rocker arm, pry it out and remove it, then you have acess to the lifter and just pull it out and replace it.

and you should get some motor oil, let the lifter sit in it a bit and take a paper clip put it inside the hole and until the lifter compresses properly.
if it isn't compressing properly keep bleeding it unitl it does.

keep doing that to all the lifters and rotate the engine by hand. you dont need to remove the cam gears or anything just the valve cover(obviously) and the driver side tire.(so you can reach the crank pulley)

alright cool i willl see about buying the lifters tomorrow since my dad agreed to help me out on this. So basically just push the paperclip in until I fill the lifter hard or it compresses fully I will feel something tho right.

Like eric said, the lifters can be replaced without removing the cams (quick way) but the lifters by the cam gears are extremely difficult to do this way. The way wes outlined is a better way to do it, but i would just removed the timing belt completely and the cams. And as for your lifter bleeding, here you go
