Speed Density...check it out
I'm sure some of you have heard of it. I'm inches away from diving into this project head first. Basically this guy took the E931 ecu image (basically what most 1g cars use in the EPROM ecu) and modified it to run without the MAF. All you do is hook up a 3 bar MAP sensor, IAT sensor (intake air temp), and either burn the modified chip or run it through an emulator like the Ostrich. An emulator is recommended b/c you'll be making lots of changes as you tune and you don't want to have to burn a new chip each time.
Essentially this allows you to tune on the fly like DSMLink, and it runs speed density like AEM....all for about $210!!! (that's the price of the Ostrich and the two sensors). Another great thing about it is that the project is open source. Anybody can modify it to their needs, and the community at the forums is unbelievably helpful.
As I told some of you already I was thinking of getting the ostrich to tune with using TunerPro (which modifies your stock EPROM coding, like DSMLink). The addition of speed density to the equation really makes this a great tuning solution.
There *are* some cons to running this, though. You have to eliminate your EGR, and you have to re-tune whenever you change your intake or exhaust since the Volumetric Efficiency (VE) changes. Overall, though, I really think the pros outweigh the cons. For more info click on the link above.
