Post to sea-foam or not to sea-foam a 420a
well i wasn't sure where to ask this. but i was considering sea-foaming my 420a

so my logic is this, when the engine was in the other car (i almost completed a engine swap BTW) it barely passed smog for various reasons. i was thinking ill sea-foam it and clean it out. that will help it pass smog correct?

so i was bored and on youtube as usual. i was watching people sea-foam eclipses. and i see a comment from somebody saying its stupid to sea-foam a eclipse. specifically the 4g63.

what he said was this quote "Well your dsm could/will get lifter tick. Your dsm most likely depending on what you own, is a high compression motor. Your most likely going to be sea foaming a dsm with high miles. Your dsm builds up carbon on the valves and pistons according to hot it wore in. Removing all of that really Isn't good considering the most popular 4g63 has VERY BAD valve seals..."

so my question to you guys is this. should i go ahead with the sea-foam? if so have any of you done a sea-foam before?

if your answer is no don't sea-foam it. what do you suggest to help my 420a run cleaner and better?

Thanks guys!

That guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
Everyone on youtube is a retarded loser.

Fact: 4G63 =NOT high compression motor. 6bolt is 7.9:1 CR, 7bolt 8.5:1
420A = 9.5:1 which is mild for a NA motor
11:1+ is a high compression motor

Not once have I taken an engine apart and looked at valves were they ever covered in carbon, little bit, but not like those techron commercials make it out to be. Running it through the combustion chamber will only clean out your combustion chamber and exhaust valves for the most part. On a car with alot of miles it will actually lower your compression and help with pre-ignition due to the carbon on the top of the pistons retaining heat like hot coals. If you are trying to run big boy boost, high compression and hot spots on your piston is the last thing you want.

So far that genious on youtube is very wrong.
The other use of seafoam is pouring it into your crank case. This is where it will cause problems with high mileage motors. Wether it be 4g63, k20, B16B series, 2JZGTE, anything. Dont matter what it is. When your seals (front main, rear main, valve stem seals, cam shaft seal, anything that holds oil behind a moving part) are old and worn, they are old and worn and that's that and should be replaced. The reason the dont leak sometimes with because using conventional oil leaves behind deposits when it breaks down under heat and strain that lodges itself into the leaky seals, sealing them up. When you seafoam it, or switch to synthetic oil, which has detergents meant to clean these deposits, you start to leak oil.

Conclusion: seafoam or any cleaning agent is not the culprit of the problem, your underlying problem is a shitty old motor that needs service. And people believe snake oil products will make it new again. Seafoam does what it claims, cleans out your engine, but now your old leaky seals are clean so they leak. it just poured peroxide on your cut thats covered in dirt so it doesn't bleed. You clean off the dirt, now your hemophilic.

To the original question, you're not doing poorly on your smog test due to a dirty engine. There is almost certainly something wrong with your emissions system. If you would like to determine what it is, the results of your test are a good determining factor since different components help lower certain emission's compounds.

so in other words.. SEA-FOAM AWAY! right? lol

but here are my smog results from when the engine was in the other car.

now these are the fail results. i don't know what happened to the pass results. but from what i remember he said all he did to make it pass was clean spark plugs and cables? im not too sure i forget now

High HC means an improper burn, fuel is getting past unburnt. Instead of cleaning your ignition components, change them with new spark plugs and wires.
