Damn SoCal rain!! Help!
On my way to work driving slowly and avoiding huge lakes, some baboso speeds off infront of me hits a puddle and splashes a wave of water on my hood/windshield. Like 5 miles later while in traffic the car started running really sluggish I could even feel the vibration of the engine trying to push on the accelerator pedal. It idled perfectly but it was hesitating when I steped on the gas. Could it have started to hydrolock but didn't quite do it? I have a K&N FIPK and zero boost leaks. Plugs were changed around 3-4k miles ago and gapped at .028 with NGK BPR7ES. Wires around 6-5k miles ago with NGK wires. This is the second time it happens and also during rainy day. Any thoughts?
BTW, no c.e.l's and started making a knocking noise but went away.

Are there vents exposing the engine bay to the elemants? Your filter may have gotten wet and sucked up water... Which is always a bad thing

No vents whatsoever, only edges where the hood meets the fender that's it?

Check your spark plug wells for water. It is pretty common for them to collect condensation and your ignition system sucks when the ends of the plug wires are sitting in water.

I'll check the plugs. Is it a good idea to take out the the plugs, crank the engine and let the water out if any? I read an article the first time it happened but not sure if it's a smart idea to do so.

If there is water in the plug wells make sure you get it all out before removing the plugs, an air compressor works great for this. It won't hurt to crank it with the plugs out but I don't think it will do any good. Partially hydrolocking and engine is not possible and if the car runs at all it has already sent any moisture from the combustion chambers out of the exhaust.

I'll check the plugs and maf today. The weird thing is that it only happened on my way to work. After 5 hours it ran perfectly fine. Maybe the water that was there at all was condensed with the heat of the engine?

Sounds like you might have an electrical problem with the ignition system. Maybe some loose connections that water messes with and once it is dry all things go back to normal.

I used to have a camaro that would act similar when it was raining if I hit any big puddles. I had a cold air intake with the filter in the wheel well in front of the passenger tire. The MAF would get wet and it run like crap for a while. I pulled the CEL and it was a throwing a code for the MAF.

I checked the spark plugs, wires, coil pack, and maf and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. I did find out plug on #2 was pretty lose but that's it. Maf was bone dried and I blew every connection I could find with pressurized air. Today on way home from work. When at idle, it vibrates enough that I can feel it in the clutch and even the shifter. But when I take off it stops. I also can hear a different exhaust tone than before, seems to be a bit deeper. I might have a lose exhaust hanger because at idle I hear banging underneath the chasis.

splashes of water wont hydrolock an engine. The filter would have to be fully submerged in water to do it. Usually happens to the NA guys with cold air intakes and filter is 3" off the ground. A bit of water droplets or splash aint going to do anything. I used to spray 12gallons per hour worth of water directly into the engine for performance reasons, a splash aint going to do it. To hydrolock a 2G you gotta be in water up higher than your headlights, then it can happen. More likely you got some electrical part wet and it got pissed off and got ok when it dried off.

Think the issue was the MAF getting wet. My buddy decided to do an oil change on his WRX in the rain we're having right now. Left the hood open and drenched the filter, not knowing this at the time he took it around the block and it ran like hell and wouldn't rev past 4k rpms. I cleaned his maf and let the filter dry up... Runs fine

Doing an oil change during rain is fail Anyways, can a loose ground wire cause any electrical or mechanical problems when its wet? I looked today under the car and the ground that connects to the dowpipe is lose.
