Power steering
Alright guys....I'm thinking about just cutting the belt to my power steering until I can get some money to fix it because its leaking fluid from the steering rack in a retardedly idiotic fashion. Other than that...the car doesn't leak fluids except oil from the valve cover gasket. Will cutting off the power steering damage the rack pinion steering? If so...my car will just keep peeing on over ones drive way.

Re: Power steering
supposedly that is bad to do b/c the rack/pinion on a power steering setup relies on power steering fluid for lubrication. I say either get it rebuilt or pull a manual rack from a n/t 1g and put that in. How bad is the leak? You can keep topping it off until you find a good solution.

Re: Power steering
is your power steering rack leaking? or the power steering pump? if the pump itself is leaking, i have a complete p/s pump reseal kit f/s. or is it from the lines going to/from the p/s pump?

Sorry to jack this, but I'm looking to buy a pump seal kit. Erix, if he doesn't want it, I'll buy it off you.

Re: Power steering
i've chopped the belt in a pinch when one of the hard lines busted on a spirited drive on a closed course in the middle of nowhere AZ. Then got lazy for half a year till I moved to a place where tight parallel parking was an everyday ordeal. Bought a new line and topped it off and it worked fine.

Re: Power steering
Yeah....thats the most common fix: clipping both sides and tying it off: then with some P/S fluid to keep the parts and rack lubricated. But I decided just to keep my P/S until I can afford a new one....about $275. I would go to the junk yard but those 1g's already racked some serious miles on them and who knows...I might be getting another crappy rack.
