Post subject:  starter problems

so I am having problems with my starter as the title says, a few months back i did my auto to manual swap on my spyder and when i started it up it worked just fine. The next time i went to start it it did a clicking noise followed by a grinding sound so i figured the starter was to close to flywheel do to overtight bolts or something so I backed them off a bit and also shimmed the starter a bit, so i go to try again and same thing. So I didnt drive the car for about a month now and went to pick it up from my brothers house and, BAM what do you know same thing, at this point it is starting to bug me. I parked the car and removed the starter took it down to autozone and had it tested and guess what? it passed. So the starter is good and i reinstalled it hoping that would somehow take care of it but now it only clicks and wont turnover. I checked all grounds as well as the positive side and everything seems to be fine,I have done some research and it seems that alot of people just say the ground and starter relay, does anyone on hear have any idea what it may be?

Retest the ground. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the autos and manuals in starters, but try to borrow another starter and see what happens.

Is your car a 420A or 4G64 car? If you have a 4G64 then there are different starters for auto and manual.

Yup when I got a starter it was actually bigger then my stock one. It turned over perfectly and then the little wheel started grinding the flywheel. I think you may have the wrong starter. It might be to big thus the wheel sitting to close to the wheel and grinding.

no unfortunately thats not it I have a automatic starter and a manual starter as well and at first when i put the auto one on it did a continues grinding and when i put the manual one on it is now giving me my current situation im going to replace my grounds even though they dont look bad and hope for the best, but if anyone has any other thoughts keep them coming! Thanks for the input.

Since it's 420a, it's easy to yank it out. Pull it back out and If it works, put it back in and If it works, you probably got bad connection or ignition switch. If it doesn't your flywheel or something is jacked.

Its a 4g64 and a pain in the ass (in my opinion) to change the starter, so im going to replace the grounds, but i think im leaning towards the flywheel now as you stated, but then again it may be my ignition switch as well, i dont know im thinking of just taking it to a shop and having them fix it if the grounds dont work.

Mine has some ignition switch as well and thats the problem. Does take a few turns on the key for it to start if it is it might be your ignition. I changed the starter cable all grounds and brand new terminals still same thing. It will end up being your ignition switch like mine.

do you have a turbo timer? if so, what kind is it? knockoff or real?

might be same issue that Havoc 60-1 had.

Me neither I have never done it before but you can probably figure it out yourself. You should turn the your engine and check your flywheel maybe it has missing teeth or something. I remember my old 240 was like that. Same thing but turned out my starter was grinding the teeth on the flywheel. Maybe your starter isnt catching or something. Im just saying you can replace all the wires but hey that might even be it for you. To answer your question I havent changed it either I just deal it with. It takes sometimes 9 turn for it to turn and my starter is brand new and new cables etc. Your car is 4g64 right. Oh yeah erix he isnt turboed I think.

Post subject:  Re: starter problems

you know now that im thinking about it... I think it might be the starter plate , im not sure if it is the same from the automatic to manual but i dont think so, but then again im not sure has anyone ever heard of this being the problem? I would like to not have to replace the flywheel if possible, because that is what i have narrowed it down to, it grinds to bad for it to be the ignition switch.
