I never understand why anyone wants to get rid of power steering when their car isn't a serious road racing or drag racing car.
If you're going to eliminate power steering do it the RIGHT way like Sam mentioned. Simply disconnecting your power steering is not the right way to do it. The power steering fluid (ATF for DSM's) lubricates the steering rack. Hacking it up will just lead to a messed up steering system, and parallel parking will be a bitch.
To do it right, get a manual steering rack out of a NT DSM. "Lock to lock" means how many turns of the wheel it takes to turn the wheels from full lock left to full lock right. Most car enthusiasts like fewer turns lock to lock because it takes less steering wheel input to make the turn. Turn in is quicker and the overall handling is less sloppy. Lancer Evo 8's and 9's are known for their incredibly fast ratios. The manual DSM rack has different gearing to make it easier to turn the wheel w/o power assist, but the downside of this is that it takes more turns to go lock to lock. Despite this, I've heard that going to a manual rack on a road racing DSM is fantastic. Much better stability and feel for the road. I don't know, I'd have to try it myself to see if the sacrifice of steering ratio is worth it.
