Post subject:  Oil burning?

It's been 1k miles since my last oil change... It went frm full filled mark on oil stik to the low mark. I've never done a leak-down before, nor do I know how to/where to go to get one done... The turbo has no shaft play what-so-ever, it doesn't move side2side or up&down, but the turbine does spin freely. I'm thinking it could be seals, piston rings, or the turbo is burning oil. I don't see any smoke as I floor it... The exhaust tip is black tho.

I notice on the fwy onramp going in full boost, it still pulls but the higher the rpms the slower it goes, it feels like when I try hitting max boost it bogs a taste. not sure if that's normal, I very rarely take it past 5k rpm.. I'm guessing a boost leak, I still haven't had time to make a tester and don't kno anyone with a air compressor... I wanna get my DSM checked, leak down/boost leak tested.. Anyone live near Norwalk/Santa Fe that does boost leak tests? An might kno what's the reason for the oil burning?

I mainly drive local 6days a week... 10 miles a day on average. On Saturday I work in irvine an drive 70miles round trip. I'm not sure what's making it worse, driving streets or fwy

So how much oil is it burning, exactly? The easiest thing you can do is a compression test, which will help you determine if the engine is in good shape. You can buy a cheap compression tester and any auto parts store. A leakdown test is more accurate, but way more complicated and expensive.

There is a little hole in the wall shop in Santa Fe Springs called Road Race Engineering that can perform both a boost leak test and a leak down test on your car.

I lost about 1qt in a little over 1k miles since I changed my oil... So I'm guessing the car burns about 1qt every 1k miles. It's not leaking anywhere, the car was babied. Now the challenge is finding where and why it's burning oil...

Kool, I'll keep RRE in mind when I'm ready to head down there, it's about 10mins frm my house :) I gotta get intercooler piping frm them pretty soon, swapping out the stocks

my problem before i had that was it was coming out of my dipstick from boosting a lot of the time it may not look like it, but does your dipstick atleast come up

Post subject:  Re: Oil burning?

If there is enough pressure to push oil past your dipstick then there is way to much blow-by from the rings and oil is probably getting into the cylinders and burning off as well.

Post subject:  Re: Oil burning?

yup. that's when there's most pressure getting past the rings

Do those catch cans really help relieve pressure? Or is it still not enough...

Post subject:  Re: Oil burning?

For that purpose, it's a crumby band-aid. They're just intended to not leak the oil back into your intake and gunk up your intercooler. If you're blowing dipsticks and coating your valve cover in oil, start saving for a motor rebuild now instead of catch cans.

Ok.... How much do a fully complete motor rebuild go for? $500-1000?

All depends what your goals are. You'll either want a stock rebuild or upgrade everything, or anything in between.

I'm looking at a stock to semi-stock rebuild... Since it's a DD I don't wanna push big power. But If certain parts are just as much as aftermarket, I might as well go aftermarket.

If i rebuild I want it to last about 100-200k miles. It's at 98k right now, I'm hoping I can get another 50k before shit starts breaking down lmao! and gives me time to save up for a rebuild or a 6bolt swap. I heard theyr "bullet proof", or atleast better than the 7bolt.

I haven't done anything crazy, still running a taste above stock boost. (took the BCS restrictor off) and I don't run it hard that much.... Maybe I do a run once a week when a Honda hits me up on the way to work.... Other than that I baby it.
