Getting head
So I gotta do a hg job ( yay), and I was wondering how to tell if a head is warped? Also how much would it be to have a machine shop fix it? Just don't wanna pay too much you know? Also any good shops in the ie area? Going with an oem head gasket, and ARP studs btw

Re: Getting head
To tell if a head is warped you need to get a straight edge that you know is actually straight and make sure it lays flat on the head in several places in several directions.
As for machine shops, Millennium Motorsports in Temecula does good work for decent prices.

Re: Getting head
Irv why do you ask questions like this??? lol i have a straight edge and feeler gauges. we can check it when its pulled... and to have it surfaced its usually $80-$120+ depending on how good of a surface you want

Re: Getting head
You can check it with a straight edge and a feeler gauge but you might as well have it resurfaced while you have it apart. Take it to Carquest in Upland (909) 985-2791. It was an old Graves Auto and they have a full machine shop. Carquest bought them out a few years ago but they still have the same equipment and same guys working for them. They can resurface the head as smooth as you need it for $35 and it's another $35 to have it pressure tested. Ask for Jodee, he did all the machining on my engine and has been doing it for a long time. Tell him Dustin that used to work for Outlaw Racing Engines sent you.

Re: Getting head
Get the whole gasket set here: It comes out to $69.38 shipped. Even comes with new valve stem seals which probably need replacing.
We are in Bruce's "LA Hot" zone as he calls it and his standard UPS shipping for $11.38 will get to you the next day. You just have to order before 2pm pacific time. His parts are legit, good quality parts in my experience.
ARP head studs are $91.45 shipped from Extreme Psi
Pressure test and resurface $70.00 Head gasket kit $69.38 ARP head studs $91.45 _______________________________ Total= $230.83
I'd say you're going to end up spending about $250-275 with tax and misc shit like silicone, brake cleaner, oil, coolant etc. Maybe even a tad more in you have the machine shop put in the new valve stem seals that come with the head gasket kit.

Re: Getting head
You think tht gasket set will be ok for turning up boost? Obviously not 30psi on an hx,but I'm hoping 16-18psi out the 14Biznatch

Re: Getting head
and three months later........ i just ordered the arps from jay racing (had to order something else from there so why not), and of course i got ups ground, so hopefully be here in a week. adam said he got me on the gaskets and stuff so woot! only thing left now is to take it apart, check if the head is warpped (most likely is), and go from there. anything else i should take care of while shes under the knife? all timing related things were replaced very recently.
